Am not sure where others views stand on fly fishing with spoon flies! Would you regard it more as a lure than a fly? Personally, if I can cast it with a fly rod and line….with ease! Then it’s a fly in my eyes.
The definition of a fly fishing fly is
“Fly Fishing is an angling method in which an artificial “fly" is used to catch fish. The fly is cast using a fly rod, reel, and specialized weighted line. Artificial flies are constructed by fly tying in which furs, feathers & thread or any of very many other materials are tied onto a fishhook. Artificial flies may be constructed to represent all manner of potential freshwater & saltwater fish prey to include aquatic and terrestrial[sg1] Insects, crustaceans, worms, baitfish, vegetation, flesh, spawn, small reptiles, amphibians and even birds.
The definition for a fishing lure is
“A fishing lure is a type of artificial fishing bait which is designed to attract a fish’s attention. The lure uses movement, vibration, flash and colour to bait fish. Many lures are equipped with one or more hooks that are used to catch fish when they strike the lure.
In all honesty I’ve very rarely seen many fly fisherman over here using them and are probably more popular with the saltwater brigade than freshwater. Whether this is because the general view within fly fishing circles over here is that they’re regarded more as a lure than a fly I can’t say, or maybe they just aren’t used over here on the still water purely because they just don’t catch fish. I have used micro spoon flies just like these on a couple of rivers in Finland and Sweden and caught Trout, Perch, Zander, Pike and even a summer Chub, but whether I will be successful with them here on the still waters is another story altogether, but am confident a couple of them will bag me a few fish at least. Yes not a traditional way of fly fishing for still water trout granted, but then again I’m not much of a traditionalist when it comes to Trout anyway! Am sure there are numerous boo boys out there that will ridicule me for fishing with them but each to their own I suppose. It’s “all about the grab” for me and if they improve my odds then so be it. If they don’t then it’s back to the vice!
