Soft Hackles aren't a fly I fish with regularly but when the situation arises I like to have a decent selection to fall back on. A simple fly that imitates a number of water born insects like emerges, nymphs n spiders and although you can fish this fly technically they are actually one of the simplest flies to fish with in smaller streams which appeals to me because I like to keep things as simple as possible really purely because I practically take bugger all with me these days for a day on a river.
The little pearlers on the Bushmans love these buggers so much I generally end up fishing them all day. All these have been tied on either #18 and #20 hooks which I find a real ball ache to tie up purely because my eyes aren't what they used to be and I ain't prepared to fork out R1500 for a decent magnifying glass/light set up. I know I shouldn't complain but I'm the ultimate tight arse when it comes to unwanted spending.
Anyway I prefer my soft hackles to look like they've been dragged through a hedge backwards.
